If AWS were an ERP

by Chuck Boecking

The purpose of this post is to highlight the strengths of iDempiere by comparing it to one of the world’s greatest computing platforms… Amazon Web Services (AWS).

If AWS were an ERP, it would:

  • Only charge for what you use (link below)
  • Be “tools focused” and allow users to compose the ideal solution (link below)
  • Scale using using commonly available technologies and practices (link below)
  • Allow you to start small (link below)
  • Support you as you grow big (link below)
  • Make the data available to you for consumption in other services (link below)
  • Make the application available globally (link below)

These are some of the biggest reasons for using iDempiere, open source ERP.

Start Small and Only Pay as You Go

iDempiere is accessible and affordable to the whole world (not just the wealthy elite). iDempiere runs on AWS’s free tier. This means a small, emerging company can run iDempiere for virtually no cost.

Every feature ships with iDempiere out of the box. Nothing is held behind a paywall. Simply create roles that expose the needed features, and you have a simple yet powerful ERP with no additional costs.

Scale iDempiere as your business grows. (Jon link)

Compose Your Solution

While iDempiere is a complete off-the-shelf ERP solution, it makes little attempt to impose pre-created advanced workflows on new companies. Every company operates differently.

Your ERP success depends on keeping operations as simple as humanly possible while still supporting what makes your organization unique.

iDempiere’s tools-first focus provides the building blocks to orchestrate custom workflows that support your unique business operations.

Scale Using Simple Technologies

As you scale your ERP users, you simply scale your iDempiere instance. It grows in a linear and predictable way. The only additional cost for adding more users is the incremental infrastructure cost – nothing more. Here are the typical scaling steps:

Step 1: split the application server from the database
Step 2: add your database to AWS RDS (for read replication and redundancy)
Step 3: add a load balancer in front of multiple application servers

Before you know it, you are supporting hundreds of concurrent ERP users.

Grow Big – Very Big

The largest instances of iDempiere have hundreds of worldwide users. Some users are mobile. Others are remote, and others are sitting at a corporate desk.

One of iDempiere’s greatest strengths is helping a company support growth. By the time you reach 500 concurrent users, you will most likely be shopping for a SAP-style solution. It is nice to know that a single application can carry you through the growth and competitive stages and land you on the doorstep of becoming a $1B company.

Make Data Work for You

iDempiere is quite possibly the most open ERP system in the world. The project evolves in an open and transparent manner. iDempiere uses standard, off-the-shelf technologies like Java and PostgreSQL databases. There is virtually no limit to the number of applications that can read from and contribute to your business intelligence systems.

Global Support

ERP supports two primary groups: 1. Operations and 2. Accounting.

Operations needs local support using local workflows in the user’s local language. iDempiere is used worldwide. Many ERP systems operate regionally. iDempiere was created by a worldwide community of developers and integrators, and it is supported globally.

Accounting requirements and currencies differ around the world. iDempiere’s accounting was modeled after Oracle Financials, and it supports global accounting requirements in the following ways:

  • Multiple document currencies
  • Multiple functional currencies
  • Multiple accounting dimensions
  • Multiple charts of accounts
  • Multiple financial calendars

Top 3 ERP

When choosing an ERP, we recommend you include the following in your selection:

  • 1 vertical market ERP – one that claims to have solved your specific problem.
  • 1 general purpose proprietary ERP – one that is commonly used in your region.
  • 1 open source ERP – one that can change how you invest in your people and your organization’s operational effectiveness.

By including open source ERP in your selection, you gain the advantages that AWS provided to the IT world and apply then to drive success in your organization. Choose an ERP that helps you:

  • Start small and only pay as you go
  • Compose a solution that works best for you
  • Scale in a linear and predictable way
  • Make the most of your valuable people and data

Getting Started

I am an ERP educator. I believe that open-source ERP have achieved mainstream capabilities, and as a result, more companies can create greater efficiency across their organization. I started using the iDempiere code base in 2003. Back then, it was called Compiere. In 2006, I started my first multi-million dollar installation. Since then, ADempiere has helped me create great success with distribution and manufacturing companies all over the world. My vision of success is to find companies that can best use open-source ERP to help them achieve a single, global instance that drives a discontinuous increase in profitability. I believe that organizations win when they own their technology.
